Food and changing your taste buds

Homemade cottage cheese coconut cake. Yum!

Do you love sweets? Most people do, some more than others. And when you want something sweet; nothing else will satisfy as a substitute. That is until you stop eating sweets. I have stopped eating sugar, almost completely. Every now and again I have really dark chocolate that’s got a bit of sugar in it. But I try to keep to somewhere around 1-2 grams of sugar if I do indulge. What I am finding because of this; is that I don’t crave it, rarely.

What has also changed is what I deem as sweet. Sugar is not good for us, plain and simple. It is snuck into so many things that we eat. So much so that you really need to become an investigative researcher when reading labels. If and when I do have a desire to have a goodie; my go to is fresh whipped cream made with monk fruit sweetener over top of some sort of keto cake I made at home. Although I try to even keep that at a minimum. Because the longer you have sweets, the more your brain says “more please.” It is amazing how my taste has changed now though; and health has a first say in what I eat.

Rich over sweet works for me now; and it is far more satiating. The longer you eat sweets, the longer it will take you to stop eating them. Of course that is only if you are wanting to stop eating sugar or at least cutting down. First, you have to decide that you want to cut down or eliminate sugar from your diet. Next, try to find a substitue for when the sweet monster arrives, but keep it to a minimum. Keto cakes and things like whipped cream with monk fruit help.

Sugar takes a hold and it can be very difficult to shake. Even if you drink wine everynight, it contains sugar; unless you drink a straight shot of a pure spirit which contains no sugar. My drink of choice these days is some good sipping tequila, a squeeze of lime on the rocks. So if you are trying to cut back on your evening cocktails; you may notice your goodie cravings get worse because of the sugar content.

When you eat sugar it breaks down into glucose and enters your blood stream. Then your pancreas releases insulin and it gets the glucose into your cells to use for energy. Any leftover glucose, which happens when you eat too much sugar or carbs is stored in your fat cells and liver. When you continue to eat a high carb (which turns into glucose) and sugar diet; insulin tells your body to store more fat. This can disrupt any fat loss because of the high insulin levels.

Eating a low carb, very low sugar diet will help you to lose weight. I suggest getting rid of the sugar first; it is more of a craving thing. The carbs can be the next to go. I now eat a very low carb diet; this is my choice for health. It’s not hard, it might seem like an impossible challenge. But I’ll share what I do and have done. It’s easy if you set your mind to it.

You only have one body, take care of it.
