 Ask yourself

Kids are a whole other ball game.

  • Do you realize that 100% supervision is required with dogs and children?

  • Kids can do strange things to dogs and the dog may not always tolerate it.

  • Did you know that many dogs are not fans of children? This is why you really need to locate a dog that is good with children.

  • Do you have time for your children and a new dog?

  • Are you planning to have a new human addition anytime soon? This is often the reason why people don’t keep a dog.

  • The American Humane Society claims that 51% of dog bite victims are children.

  • Are you prepared to teach your children how to interact appropriately with your dog?

  • Are you prepared to teach your dog how to interact appropriately with your children?

  • Will you have a place where your dog can have “quiet time” away from your children?

These are all important points to consider when adding a dog to your family. Often waiting until your youngest child is at least 5-6 years old can ease the chaos of adding a puppy to your family. The older children are when you add a dog to the family the easier it is for them to understand how to interact with a dog. It also allows them to learn how to take part in the care of your new dog.
