Welcome to the April recipe and hopefully spring weather for you all.  Here in Southern California we have had a very rainy winter and now a beautiful sunny spring so far.  Our landscape is now a beautiful green, replacing the brown from last summers drought.

This months recipe is a favorite of mine that I have been making for a very long time.  It is great for breakfast or anytime to share with your dog.

Sunrise

  • 1 small banana
  • 1 cup organic old fashion oats
  • 1/2 cup cashew butter
  • dash of pink Himalayan salt (if nut butter is unsalted)
  • 1/2-1 tsp vanilla

Preheat oven to 350.

Mash banana really well if you are hand mixing or using a hand mixer.  If using a stand mixer then throw banana and all other ingredients into bowl.  Turn on low and mix well then turn to medium and mix very well.

Scoop approximately 1 tsp of cookie dough onto parchment lined cookie sheet.

Bake for approximately 15 minutes and then place on cooling rack.

This is a small recipe that can be doubled if you and your dog love them.  Also you can use other nut butters instead of cashew if you prefer.  I have also put ground egg shell in them when I'm not eating them.  ;)  They are also great with lemon zest added.  This is a great basic recipe that you can really mess with.

Enjoy!

Training Tip #4 - April

Does your dog ignore you?  Many canine guardians complain about being ignored.  I regularly hear "my dog doesn't listen to me."  Of course all dogs are different as we are; but some naturally listen better than others.  Then there is the fact that we often say things to our dogs that mean nothing to them.  Words that hold no importance can often start a habit of ignoring.

While some dogs learn quickly when to listen and when there is no need to listen; they will become better listeners if you hold the key to speaking to them. Importance!  When you want your dog to listen and comply; take action, speak with short meaningful phrases and add umph (tone) to your words.

By adding important activities to meaningful words you can lessen the chance of a bad habit of ignoring.  Even sounds can become important when they are linked to fun and exciting activities.  I have instilled a quick attention getter with a chch sound.  I make it right before a treat toss when we are out on a walk. Elsa will stop whatever she is doing and prepare to catch.  This is a great way to grab attention when I need it.
