Welcome to May. May is one of my favorite months; could be because my birthday is in May. My twin brother's birthday is of course in May as is my oldest brother, husband and my Mom. May is and has always been a very busy month.
With spring upon us all; we may be out and about with our dogs. So here is another great recipe to throw in your pocket and bring along.
I love this recipe. It makes a beautiful soft dough and the smell when it is baking is glorious. Hope your pooch and you enjoy!
Sawyer Bites
- 1 cup buckwheat flour
- 1 cup oat flour
- 1 cup garbanzo bean flour
- 5 oz goat cheese
- 1/4-1/3 cup water
- 1/3 cup honey
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp cinnamon
Preheat oven to 350.
Put all ingredients into a bowl. Only use 1/2 of the water to start off with; you can always add more. Mix by hand, hand mixer or stand mixer for 3-5 minutes until very well blended.
Roll out on organic brown rice flour. Roll to approximately 1/8" thickness for best crunchy results.
Bake on sheet for 15 minutes at 350 then turn down to 250 letting some of the heat out. Bake for approximatley 30-60 min. more. Turn oven off and let more heat out, leave in for another hour to dry well.
Training tip #5
Leave it. Wouldn't you love if you could just tell your dog to "leave it" and they wouldn't touch the item that you didn't want them to touch?
Lots of practice, consistency and speed is needed for a rock solid "leave it." Holding a piece of food in your hand tell your dog to "leave it." If they go for and they will simply close your hand and DO NOT let them get it. Open your hand and try again. If and when they don't take it or back up from your hand immediately toss a treat from your other hand onto the ground. Never allow them to take the item you have told them to leave.
Work at getting food onto the ground, dropping it off the counter or dropping it randomly; but always tell them to "leave it" before dropping the item in the beginning. Always treat with something else, never what is in your hand or dropped.
With enough practice your dog will automatically wait for the okay when something is dropped onto the ground. :)
